President Trump's Visit Underscores Need for New Markets and Lower Production Costs

January 27, 2026

Statement on behalf of Iowa Soybean Association President Tom Adam of Harper

“The Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) thanks President Trump for visiting Iowa today and looks forward to his remarks. His visit comes at an important moment for farm families and the soybean industry. Expanding international and domestic markets for Iowa and U.S. soybeans is essential to the industry’s economic stability. We appreciate the president’s support of biofuel policies that grow markets for U.S. soybeans while strengthening domestic energy production. We also welcome the resumption of U.S. soybean sales to China, the world’s largest purchaser of globally traded soybeans. These actions have real impacts for farmers—supporting farm income, strengthening rural communities, and reinforcing our nation’s energy independence.

“At the same time, more work is needed to position farmers for long-term success in a highly competitive global marketplace. While the Farmer Bridge Assistance Program will provide short-term relief, ISA believes lasting progress will come from policies that address the industry’s underlying challenges. Priority areas include reducing the cost of key inputs, increasing demand for soybeans by incentivizing expanded biofuels production and use, and restoring and strengthening trade relationships with key purchasers of U.S. soy.

“With Iowa farmers preparing to plant this year’s crop, timely and tangible progress on these priorities is critical as many continue to struggle to pencil out a profit. We look forward to working collaboratively with the administration to restore profitability to an industry that is essential to our nation’s economy and to meeting global demand for high-quality, reliably produced soy.”
