Take the guesswork out of nitrogen management

Nitrogen decisions don't end when the planter leaves the field. Weather, soil conditions and crop demand can all influence how much nitrogen a crop ultimately needs.

That's why the Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Nitrogen Initiative, Iowa State University and the Grundy County Soil and Water Conservation District are bringing farmers together Aug. 18 for a Nutrient Management Field Day near Reinbeck.

The event will highlight practical tools and conservation strategies designed to help farmers improve nutrient efficiency while protecting their bottom line.

“Nitrogen is one of the largest input costs on many farms, and every year is different,” says Evan Brehm, ISA conservation agronomist. “This field day is about giving farmers the tools and information to make better decisions based on what's happening in their own fields instead of relying on guesswork.”

Nutrient Management Field Day, Tuesday, Aug. 18 at BarLea Roots Event Centre, 24735 U Ave. Reinbeck.

Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by a welcome and lunch at 11 a.m. The program opens with a conservation agronomy update from ISA, and NRCS at 11:45 a.m., followed by a presentation on the Iowa Nitrogen Initiative at 12:30 p.m. The afternoon concludes with a discussion of available conservation programs and a farmer testimonial beginning at 1:15 p.m., before the event adjourns at 1:30 p.m.

Why it matters

The program will showcase the Iowa Nitrogen Initiative’s N-FACT tool, which uses real-time weather, soil and management information to help farmers evaluate nitrogen needs throughout the growing season.

Attendees will also hear the latest research on variable-rate nitrogen management, learn about conservation programs available in their area and hear firsthand how farmers are using these practices on their operations.

“"Efficient nutrient management isn't just about reducing costs,” Brehm says. “It's about applying nutrients where and when they're needed while finding opportunities that can improve soil health and water quality.”
