Fresh Pickings magazine features the next generation of farming

April 22, 2026

More than 157,000 food and health-minded Iowans discovered the latest issue of Fresh Pickings magazine in their mailboxes, email inboxes and on social media this week.

The Iowa Food & Family Project’s seasonal print publication makes modern agriculture accessible, interesting and relevant to consumers statewide through personable editorial and stunning photography.

The latest issue explores the benefits of urban gardening and expanding local food access, profiles a seasoned veterinarian with a heart for connecting consumers to the farm, and explores the welcoming and vibrant community of Oskaloosa. Readers get a behind-the-scenes look at three farmers who share what their days look like during the busy spring season, and discover recipes to elevate the midday meal with Iowa-inspired proteins and ingredients. Plus, learn about a unique farming business that raises a type of fish fed a balanced, nutritious soy-based diet, which is sold and shipped worldwide.

Iowa Soybean Association Director and farmer Summer Ory of Earlham shares what spring looks like from her farming perspective. Decisions are being made, equipment is being prepared and the family is getting ready for long days ahead.
Fresh Pickings magazine, published quarterly, is available at no cost at Iowa-based Earl May Garden Centers and distributed at Iowa FFP events (while supplies last) as well as by partners and select organizations featured in the issue. Readers can also view the publication online and request a mailed subscription at iowafoodandfamily.com/magazine/subscribe.
