ISA Applauds State Agriculture Departments for Defending Soy Health Attributes

February 6, 2026 | Brock Johnston

Ankeny, Iowa – The Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) commends the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) for unanimously adopting a Feb. 5 resolution to engage with USDA and HHS on the safety and nutritional benefits of vegetable oils, like soybean oil.

"As the nation's leader in both soybean production and processing, Iowa's soybean farmers depend on fair, science-based representations of our products in federal guidelines," said Tom Adam, ISA president and soybean farmer from Harper. "We applaud NASDA for taking this proactive step to defend the health attributes of locally produced vegetable oils, which provide a safe and affordable choice for consumers."

The resolution approved by Secretaries, Administrators, Commissioners and Directors of Agriculture for their respective states reads:

NASDA will submit public comments on any relevant USDA or HHS guidance or rulemaking, including but not limited to those seeking alignment with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, to ensure that the safety, the body of evidence-based research, and the health and nutritional benefits of vegetable oils are accurately and scientifically represented.

Iowa’s soybean farmers produced nearly 596 million bushels of soybeans in 2025, or 14% of the nation’s overall production. Iowa is the second largest soybean-producing state.
