Outdated rules cost American soybean farmers $0.33 a bushel

As soybean crushing increases to meet demand for sustainably produced fuel, assumptions about soy’s carbon intensity ought to be updated to accurately reflect the benefits of soy production on the environment, industry experts say. Relying on outdated carbon intensity modeling means farmers are missing out on an estimated 33 cents per bushel.

When outdated life cycle carbon intensity assumptions leave soybean oil co-products outside the RIN system, farmers bear the opportunity cost, an analysis by American Soybean Association Senior Economist Omid Karami and Iowa Soybean Association Chief Officer of Advocacy and Demand Matt Herman found.
