Fresh Pickings magazine features farmers, creative growing and cozy seasonal recipes

January 22, 2026 | Lydia Zerby

More than 157,000 food and health-minded Iowans discovered the latest issue of Fresh Pickings magazine in their mailboxes, email inboxes and on social media this week.

The Iowa Food & Family Project’s seasonal print publication makes modern agriculture accessible, interesting and relevant to consumers statewide through personable editorial and stunning photography.

The latest issue explores how the Loess Hills region comes to life in winter, explains how farmers help protect Iowa’s agricultural industry and introduces a farm family whose beef products are available in local restaurants. Readers will also discover two examples of innovative growing that don’t require soil or outside land space.

Additionally, we introduce a classically trained chef who has turned his passion into a way to inspire and feed the next generation, while highlighting mental health awareness initiatives that support Iowa farmers and rural communities. Finally, cozy up with slow-cooked recipe ideas that celebrate Iowa-grown ingredients.

Iowa Soybean Association Director and farmer Summer Ory of Earlham shares tips in her Fresh Picked column on making the most of locally bought frozen meat.

Fresh Pickings magazine, published quarterly, is available at no cost at Iowa-based Earl May Garden Centers and distributed at Iowa FFP events (while supplies last) as well as by partners and select organizations featured in the issue. Readers can also view the publication online and request a mailed subscription at freshpickingsmagazine.com.
