SALE OF GIANT SOYBEANS WILL BENEFIT COLLEGE-BOUND STUDENTS

URBANDALE, Iowa - This summer, the Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) has showcased Iowa’s flourishing soy industry with Soy on Parade. Soy on Parade is a collection of 18 large, three-dimensional fiberglass sculptures shaped as soybeans that have been adorned by Iowa artists. The soybeans will be sold at auction Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines.

The giant soybeans have taken Iowa by storm this summer. The four-foot tall fiberglass soybeans brightened the corridors at the state capitol, Iowa State University and several other locations. The scavenger hunt featuring the giant soybeans was widely acclaimed as one of the highlights of this year’s state fair.

Now you have the opportunity to make one of the ISA Soy on Parade soybeans part of your permanent collection. All proceeds from the sale of the Soy on Parade creations will help fund scholarships for college-bound Iowa students who are pursuing degrees in agriculture-related fields.

“Your support will help retain Iowa’s best and brightest – the future leaders of our industry,” says Curt Sindergard, a soybean grower from Rolfe and ISA president-elect. “Join us for this opportunity to invest in our future.”

Don’t see a soybean that fits you or do you have a great idea for a soybean? Then ISA has just the bean for you. A blank soybean will be sold at the auction. The winner of that soybean will have the opportunity to design it however he/she wishes. ISA will then have an artist make those ideas a reality. From logos to portraits, ISA can make this soybean suit your business or industry.

The Iowa artists who designed a soybean are as follows: Nanci Griffith (Ankeny, IA), M.D. Ashland (Ames, IA), Chris Cowan (Ames, IA), Mary Holtze (Des Moines, IA), Bill Hamilton (Des Moines, IA), Marv Freund (Urbandale, IA), Andy Chenchar (Des Moines, IA), Kathy Grove (Des Moines, IA), Cate Newberg and Alex Newberg (Urbandale, IA), Jennifer Mally (Des Moines, IA), Dot Prater (Ames, IA), Shelby Ostrander (Des Moines, IA), Jonathan Hoffman (Des Moines, IA) and Gary Usovsky (Des Moines, IA). Olmsted Elementary in Urbandale and Boone Middle School also designed a soybean.

If you wish to attend the auction, please RSVP to Sue Heath at the Iowa Soybean Association, sheath@iasoybeans.com.

The Iowa Soybean Association develops policies and programs that help farmers expand profit opportunities while promoting environmentally sensitive production using the soybean checkoff and other resources. The Association is governed by an elected volunteer board of 21 farmers.
