SOY BIODIESEL AVAILABLE IN B10

URBANDALE, Iowa - Biodiesel is now available in B10 (10 percent soy biodiesel) at Krueger BP Amoco Stations in Des Moines. Soy biodiesel is a renewable, Iowa grown fuel made of soybeans. Krueger is one of the first retail fuel companies in central Iowa to offer soy biodiesel to both on-road vehicles (semi-trucks) and consumer vehicles. There are several benefits to using B10; the most obvious benefit is that using a B10 blend reduces our dependency on foreign oil, because 10 percent of the oil is replaced with soy. Another advantage is that a soy biodiesel blend increases lubricity, therefore extending the engine’s life. Lastly, soy biodiesel burns cleaner and reduces harmful exhaust emissions.

Krueger BP began offering a B5 soy biodiesel blend in November of 2005. The demand for soy biodiesel has been great enough that the company has chosen to increase the level to B10.

“I was looking for an alternative fuel that was cheaper and one that wasn’t dependent on a foreign source,” says Scott Krueger, owner of Krueger BP Amoco. “Soy biodiesel was exactly what I was looking for.”

There are three Krueger BP area locations where you can purchase B10

• SW 9th Street in Des Moines
• NW 54th Avenue (Hwy 141) in Grimes

“The soybean checkoff has been essential to getting soy biodiesel at pumps here in Iowa,” says Cate Newberg, biobased products manager at the Iowa Soybean Association (ISA). “We are proud of Iowa’s farmers and the effort they have put into this. The Iowa Soybean Association is very pleased and excited by the great support soy biodiesel has been given here in Des Moines. We are hopeful that with continued support of soy biodiesel, Krueger BP can offer a B20 blend by the end of the summer.”

The Iowa Soybean Association develops policies and programs that help farmers expand profit opportunities while promoting environmentally sensitive production using the soybean checkoff and other resources. The Association is governed by an elected volunteer board of 21 farmers.
