URBANDALE, Iowa
- Greg and Krista Jochum, soybean and corn growers from Lawton, Iowa,
were named the American Soybean Association / DuPont Young Leader for
the state of Iowa in 2005.
Greg Jochum, age 30, and his wife Krista live on a farm in Woodbury County
near Sioux City with their two daughters. Greg says he felt compelled
to enter his name for the award because there are a declining number of
young farmers in Iowa. “There are great
opportunities out there, and we need to stay well-informed,” Jochum
says. “We also need to help inform the public on the products that
we produce and their benefits.”
That includes soy biodiesel and other new uses products. Jochum also says
it’s important to make both our domestic and global consumers aware
of U.S. farmers’ efforts to improve the protein and oil content
in our soybeans and continue working hard to provide a quality product.
Jochum also encourages young farmers to stay active and involved with
the industry.
“I see the need for more involvement in the soybean association
and like associations, particularly with young farmers, as we need to
be prepared to market our product to the world for our survival,”
Jochum says. “As a younger generation farmer, I am committed to
looking for ways to make my industry thrive.”
Jochum wants to see the environment thrive, as well. Therefore, he’s
taken appropriate measures on his farm by implementing no-till to prevent
erosion and decrease the number of passes made across the field. Jochum
also has buffer strips to minimize run off.
Greg and Krista Jochum both earned their bachelor’s degree in general
agriculture from South Dakota State University, with minors in agronomy
and ag business, respectively. Jochum is currently a Farm Bureau board
member, the Woodbury County Fair superintendent and a certified crop advisor.
“Krista and I are very appreciative of the American Soybean Association,
Dupont and Pioneer for selecting us for the Young Leader Award,”
Jochum says. “We thank them for the opportunity to meet the 21 couples
from the United States and one couple from Canada. It gave us the chance
to visit with them, learn about their operations and learn how we can
help the soybean association out.”
