Cover Crops

Cover crops are grasses or other vegetation farmers plant during or after the harvest season. Cover crops have many benefits including erosion control, water retention, improving nutrient uptake and providing an additional rotation crop to farmers which reduces weed pressure among other benefits. ISA Research teams work with farmers across the state to implement cover crops on their operations.

Nitrogen Management – 4R+

The concept of using the best timing and sources of N application is often described as 4R – the Right source, Right rate, Right time and Right placement (International Plant Nutrition Institute). Using a variety of precision agriculture tools (i.e. yield monitoring, remote sensing and GPS) farmers can conduct replicated strip trials on their own farms to collect data to quantify the effects of nitrogen timing and sources on corn nitrogen status and corn yields across relatively large areas.
