Tip of the week: Fall monitoring of soybean diseases

Given that some fields are starting to mature, fall is a good time to monitor soybean fields for yield-robbing foliar and stem diseases. Check fields for severity of disease impact and compare your notes with seed companies’ agronomic ratings to prepare for selecting next year’s varieties.

Governor Branstad proclaims September Hunger Action Month
Gov. Branstad has proclaimed September Hunger Action month in Iowa, noting more than 382,000 Iowans lack access to an adequate and nutritious diet. Approximately 146,000 are children. At the proclamation ceremony, the Iowa Food and Family Project, along with the Midwest Dairy Association, presented a $68,500 donation to the Iowa Food Bank Association.

ISA hosts events in Iowa's new Congressional districts
ISA District Advisory Councils recently hosted special events in Iowa’s new Congressional districts. Representatives and candidates were able to introduce themselves to the soybean farmers in attendance, who then had the opportunity to address questions and comments to them.

ISA and Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. help sponsor ISU crop scouting competition
On Aug. 19, ISU Extension and Outreach held its first-ever Iowa Crop Scouting Competition. High school students from around the state participated in the event, aimed at building awareness of Iowa agriculture through hands-on learning and teamwork.

AgUrban Leadership group meets with Governor
On Sept. 6, representatives of ISA’s Ag-Urban Leadership Initiative class of 2011 visited Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds. Because both had been unable to attend the class's Xtreme Strength Summit, the Governor requested the meeting to learn more about conclusions reached during class and at the Summit.

Rinehart family farm flourishes as it connects with consumers
For ISA members Greg and Polly Rinehart, growing fruits and vegetables is also a perfect complement to the family’s corn and soybean production. A portion of their bounty to on-farm visitors from inside a corn crip near the end of their lane. Most of the hand-grown produce, however, finds its way to farmers' markets.

ASA invites applications for Secure Optimal Yield Scholarship
The 2012-2013 Secure Optimal Yield Scholarship is a $5,000 one-time scholarship award presented to a high school senior who is going to pursue agriculture as a degree area of study at any accredited college or university. The scholarship is managed by the American Soybean Association and is made possible through a grant by BASF Corporation.
