ISA responds to USDA crop report

According to USDA's Sept. 10 crop report, soybean production is estimated at 3.483 billion bushels, up from the August projection of 3.433 billion bushels. For Iowa, yield estimates are for an average of 52 bushels per acre, 1 bushel higher than the August estimate. ISA President Randy VanKooten and Director of Market Development Grant Kimberley responded to the report.

To help answer questions and offer guidance in managing the disease, ISU has produced a video that explains why SDS is so severe this season, tells how to assess and manage SDS, offers practical advice growers can follow now to prepare for next year, and highlights new and ongoing ISU research on the problem

ISA elects officers, welcomes new directors and thanks retirees

At the recent ISA board meeting Randy VanKooten took his seat as president with Dean Coleman as president-elect, Mark Jackson as treasurer and Tom Oswald as secretary. Ron Heck of Perry was reelected to the executive committee. New directors Rolland Schnell, Scott McGregor and Delbert Westphalen were welcomed to the board and outgoing directors Ray Gaesser, A.J. Blair and Bob Cole were recognized.

ISA recognizes Dennis Albaugh

At the ISA Board of Directors meeting in Ankeny on Sept. 9, President Delbert Christensen and CEO Kirk Leeds presented an award to Dennis Albaugh in recognition of his generous support, including teaming up with Harry Stine to give the land for ISA's new office in the Prairie Trail Development. Many thanks, Dennis!

John Heisdorffer participates in REAP tour

John Heisdorffer, a soybean grower from Keota, IA, spent five days in the Mid-Atlantic States of Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey on Aug. 3-7, 2010, learning about agriculture in those states as part of the summer Regional Exchange and Awareness Program (REAP).

Iowa hosts REAP tour

ISA hosted the American Soybean Association/United Soybean Board-sponsored REAP tour Aug. 30-Sept. 2. REAP encourages the exchange of information, enhances farmer knowledge and develops camaraderie among farmers from different regions. This year, soybean growers from the southern and eastern part of the United States were invited to Iowa.

ASA announces $5,000 Secure Optimal Yield Scholarship

The 2011-2012 Secure Optimal Yield Scholarship is a $5,000 one-time scholarship award to be presented to a high school senior pursuing agriculture as an area of study. Candidates may apply on-line Sept. 1 through Nov. 15. The scholarship is managed by the American Soybean Association and made possible through a grant by BASF Corporation.

USDA releases disaster assistance plan

This week the USDA announced details of a plan regarding disaster assistance funding for counties designated as disaster counties due to high precipitation or moisture conditions in 2009. Soybeans are included among the eligible commodities, along with rice, sweet potatoes and cotton. Click here for a one-page summary of the program. Click here for a map of eligible counties.
