Agronomic Tip of the Week: Recommendations for managing SDS
Sudden death syndrome (SDS) is ravaging many Iowa soybean fields with yield losses expected to exceed 20 percent in some fields. Identifying the increased SDS threat five years ago, ISA committed additional checkoff investment to expand ISU research of soilborne pathogens. ISU researchers offer several recommendations for SDS management.

State climatologist: Second wettest summer on record
The summer of 2010 will enter the record books as the second wettest in Iowa history. State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says the June and July trend of torrential rains and flooding continued in August.

Survey: US farmers to seed more corn,
soy in 2011
U.S. farmers, encouraged by rallying prices, will plant more soybeans, corn and wheat for 2011 than they did a year earlier, a Farm Futures magazine survey of 550 producers indicated on Tuesday.

$1.2 million available for water quality and flood prevention projects
Iowa Ag Secretary Bill Northey encouraages eligible groups to apply for grants to support projects that will improve water quality or help prevent flooding in the state. A total of $1.2 million is available to local watershed improvement committees, soil and water conservation districts, public water supply utilities, county conservation boards, cities and counties.

UNI's NABL to investigate bio-based lubricant use in rail industry
The University of Northern Iowa's National Ag-Based Lubricants Center is the recipient of a $370,000 competitive grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to test biobased rail curve grease and hydraulic oils with petroleum-based versions of the same products.

China sees early frost in parts of northeast soy area
The China Meteorological Administration forecasts early frost in the next 10 days in the country's top soy area and also a major corn growing area. Grain markets have been concerned over the weather in the northeastern areas, which produce about 40 percent of the country's corn.
