Tip of the week: Avoid soil compaction
By John Holmes, Extension Field Agronomist Drive through the country and you'll undoubtedly see tilled soybean fields. Compaction is often eliminated by the freeze-thaw cycle we typically get in late winter while deep tillage often does not eliminate deep soil compaction.

ISA responds to October crop report
According to last week's USDA crop report, soybean production is estimated at 3.408 billion bushels, down from the September estimate of 3.483 billion bushels, while estimates for corn production are for a total of 12.664 billion bushels, compared to13.160 billion bushels estimated in September. ISA CEO Kirk Leeds and Director of Market Development Grant Kimberley responded.

Ag legend remembered
Robbins "Bob" Fischer, 91, died Sept. 9 in Waterloo. Fischer was instrumental in opening up foreign markets through his work with what was known as the Soybean Council of America.

China to resume soyoil imports from Argentina
China has lifted a six-month defacto ban on soyoil imports from Argentina, traders told Reuters on Tuesday, although high prices and low supply may still stymie shipments. "The lifting of the ban is because of political reasons, not because of prices," said an executive who declined to be identified.

First global aquaculture guidelines adopted
Global guidelines for certification of the aquaculture industry have been adopted after four years of debate, the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization has announced. "These guidelines have been developed to bring some harmony to what is the fastest growing food sector in the world," said FAO aquaculture expert Rohana Subasinghe.
