Action alert: Support Biodiesel Tax Incentive Reform and Extension

The biodiesel tax incentive is set to expire on Dec. 31. Extending the tax incentive is vital to the U.S. biodiesel industry. Contact your Senators, asking them to support and co-sponsor the Biodiesel Tax Incentive Reform and Extension Act of 2009.

Manure application on frozen or snow covered ground

Iowa Pork Producers Association legal counsel Eldon McAfee of Des Moines has compiled guidelines to help livestock producers comply with the new state law on manure application during the winter months.

ISA announces new membership structure

ISA has announced changes in its membership structure. Effective Nov. 1, 2009, membership in ISA is open to any farmer in Iowa who annually markets at least 250 bushels of soybeans, no longer requiring additional membership dues.

Agronomic tip of the week

What’s your type? (SCN HG type, that is)
If soybean varieties that are resistant to the soybean cyst nematode (SCN) are grown repeatedly, SCN populations can build up over time with increased ability to reproduce on resistant varieties. ISU nematologist Greg Tylka describes a test that determines how well an SCN population can reproduce on available sources of resistance.

Bill introduced directing EPA to focus on direct lifecycle GHG emissions

To head off possible EPA action on proposed rules for the expanded renewable fuels standard (RFS), Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.)has introduced legislation that would direct EPA to only focus on the direct lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions in its regulation.

The word from Ohio is YES!

By a vote of nearly 2 to 1, Ohio voters on Tuesday said YES! to Issue 2. Passage of Issue 2 creates a 13-member livestock care standards board chaired by the Director of the Ohio Department of Ag. Brownfield reports on this issue many in agriculture have been following.
