Agronomic tip of the week: Soybeans and weeds

Thus far in spring 2010, the weeds are looking quite healthy and not suffering from a record nasty winter.  Planting has proceeded nicely, but the weather (the wind specifically) has (or at least should have) been an impediment to herbicide applications.  Mike Owen offers weed management advice.

Take note of diseases in a cool spring

As of Monday, ISU agronomists reported near completion of corn and 50 percent of soybeans planted in Iowa. As predicted, May has been cooler and somewhat wet, with frost in the first week. The cool spring has disadvantages for some producers.

ISA responds to USDA crop report

On Tuesday, the USDA released its May crop report. Nationally, soybean acres are projected at 78.1 million acres, up 1 percent from last year. USDA projects the national average soybean yield to be 42.9 bushels per acre. ISA President Delbert Christensen responded on behalf of the association.

Another sign of growing Chinese affluence

As ISA has previously noted, one of the greatest areas of growing demand for soybeans is the need to feed the growing middle class in China. As noted in the May 12 daily briefing from Informa Economics, the number of cars registered in Beijing is one indication of that growing middle class.

ISA recognized by Ankeny

On Tuesday, May 11, the Ankeny Economic Development Corporation presented ISA with its 2010 Commercial Investment Award, in recognition of the association's bringing its headquarters and jobs to Ankeny and in appreciation for the meetings ISA hosts within the city as well as its collaboration with other organizations in the community. ISA Chief Financial Officer Donna Donovan accepted the award on behalf of ISA.
