ISU model predicts counties at risk for soybean disease, BPMV

Soybean farmers in 16 Iowa counties may have fields at risk this summer from a soybean virus called bean pod mottle virus (BPMV), according to a model developed at ISU. Transmitted by hungry bean leaf beetles, BPMV is one of the most prevalent viral soybean diseases in the United States, posing a risk to soybean production by reducing yield and affecting quality.

House Ag Committee holds farm bill hearing in Iowa

ISA President Delbert Christensen and Director Ray Gaesser, along with several ISA staff, were in attendance at last Friday’s hearing about the 2012 farm bill and spoke with Iowa Congressmen Boswell, Latham and King about a number of concerns.

Groups call for approval of FTA's

Groups representing several segments of agriculture are calling on Congress to take action on three pending free trade agreements, with Columbia, Panama and South Korea. The call is being made at the beginning of May, World Trade Month.

Congressmen question

Three Republican Senators are expressing concern with USDA’s “Know Your Farmer-Know Your Food” campaign. In a sharply worded letter to Ag Secretary Vilsack, they claim the spending of 65 million dollars is “aimed at small, hobbyist and organic producers whose customers generally consist of affluent patrons at urban farmers markets.”
