Legislative Report - Week 8

Last week the Iowa House reached its first self-imposed deadline referred to as the “First Funnel.” Funnel week seemed to be especially busy for Agriculture bills, some of which were just introduced this week. Jill Altringer gives updates on many of the bills ISA has been following through the process.

Deadline for Scholarship Applications Is March 15

ISA is looking for qualified candidates to apply for its agriculture scholarships. ISA will award as many as ten $1,500 scholarships to high school seniors pursuing a degree in an agriculture-related field. A Culinary Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to a student planning to pursue a career in food science and technology.

ASA Voting Delegates Set Policy Direction for 2011-2012

Soybean producers from all U.S. soybean growing regions last week reviewed and revised the policy direction that guides the American Soybean Association as it pursues future initiatives to improve U.S. soybean farmer profitability. ASA Urges Senate Finance Committee to Support Pending Trade Agreements

In advance of a Senate Finance Committee hearing on March 9 with United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Ron Kirk, the American Soybean Association, along with other representatives of the U.S. food and agriculture industry, reiterated support for swift passage of pending U.S. trade agreements with Korea, Colombia and Panama.

Survey Shows Iowans in Tune with Production Agriculture

IDALS Adjusting to Budget Cuts

Budget cuts continue to challenge the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship to do more with less, and Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey said he's stretching the dollars as far as he can. IDALS' budget has been cut by more than 20 percent in recent years.

Iowa FFA Chapters Participate in 2011 Challenge

Iowa FFA Chapters are among seven states participating in the 2011 FFA Chapter Challenge. Chapter members are encouraged to go out into their communities, meet farmers, learn about their operations and establish a connection with FFA. Members ask the farmers they connect with to vote for their chapter. The FFA chapters that get the most votes by May 1 will be awarded valuable prizes.
