Rumors are we are in for another wet spring. I suspect when a grower hears such a rumor, possible delays in planting “spring” to mind. The first things a pathologist thinks of are the diseases that thrive in wet conditions at planting.

On-Farm Network® schedules area meetings
On-Farm Network® Research Director Tracy Blackmer, along with Technology Manager Pat Reeg and Project Manager Matt Sweeney, will present results of several 2009 On-Farm Network replicated strip trial research projects at meetings next week in Storm Lake, Council Bluffs, Riverside, and Cedar Falls. Growers will also learn about new trials for 2010.

March 12 hearing to explore competition and regulatory issues
The Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced the agenda and panelists for the first joint public workshop that will explore competition and regulatory issues in the agriculture industry. The workshop will be held in Ankeny on March 12. Attendance is free and open to the public.

ISA emphasizes biodiesel quality
ISA President Delbert Christensen delivered a letter to legislative leaders, addressing information presented by opponents of the proposed requirement for B5 usage in Iowa. “Iowa soybean farmers, through their checkoff, have invested millions of dollars in research, and the fuel is of high quality, as witnessed by engine manufacturers’ warranties,” Christensen said.

IBB's Olson testifies before House Committee
Randy Olson, executive director of the Iowa Biodiesel Board testified before the House Agriculture Committee in favor of the proposed Iowa Biodiesel Fuel Quality Standard measure, which would ensure that petroleum companies blend at least 5 percent biodiesel (B5) into the state’s diesel fuel.

ISA scholarship application deadline approaches
ISA Ag Scholarship Program applications must be postmarked no later than March 15, 2010. As many as ten $1,500 scholarships will be presented to capable high school seniors pursuing a degree in agriculture or an agriculture-related field.

Seeking applicants for international opportunity
Eisenhower Fellowships, the premier international leadership development program, is accepting applications from experienced farmers and ranchers. The successful applicant will receive a custom-designed, all-expenses-paid program overseas for up to five weeks in one or two countries where he or she will focus on agricultural issues.

Workshop scheduled for women in ag
All northeast Iowa women involved in agriculture are encouraged to mark their calendars to attend a regional Iowa Women in Agriculture (IWIA) workshop at Nashua on Thursday, April 8. The workshop will focus on commodity marketing and long-term care insurance.
