Agronomic Tip of the Week: Glyphosate's Impact on Field Crop Production and Disease Development

Statements released in recent weeks by groups opposed to the use of genetically modified crops have claimed glyphosate use and Roundup Ready® technology will be disastrous and glyphosate has damaged crop production by decreasing nutrient availability to plants and increasing plant susceptibility to disease. Evidence to support these claims has neither been presented to nor evaluated by the scientific community.

More than 500 Attend Annual On-Farm Network® Conference

Attendees of the 2011 On-Farm Network® Conference were offered sessions on more than 20 different topics. Sessions drawing the largest crowds included discussion of growers’ environmental responsibilities by Iowa Ag Secretary Bill Northey, sessions on nitrogen management and those covering On-Farm Network studies.

Biodiesel Bounces Back

Iowa's biodiesel plants are reopening and production is increasing. In December, the lame-duck Congress renewed the $1-per-gallon tax credit for biodiesel. The renewal of the tax credit was a plus, but the real punch comes from the new mandate, which requires 800 million gallons this year and 1.2 billion gallons in 2012.

ISA Kicks Off New Initiative for Membership

Deadline for Scholarship Applications Is March 15

ISA is looking for qualified candidates to apply for its agriculture scholarships. ISA will award as many as ten $1,500 scholarships to high school seniors pursuing a degree in an agriculture-related field. A Culinary Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to a student planning to pursue a career in food science and technology.
