Tip of the week: Will soybean aphids be a problem this year?

Extension Entomologist at Iowa State University Iowa doesn't appear to be in a widespread soybean aphid outbreak, but some fields are approaching a uniform infestation of aphids and could exceed the economic threshold in August. All fields should be scouted to determine infestation levels.

USDA sets new sign-up for
conservation program
The USDA is opening the Conservation Reserve Program for sign-up. The enrollment period will run from Aug. 2 through Aug. 27. Nationally, some 31.3 million acres are enrolled, but contracts on about 4.5 million acres are due to expire this fall. About 116,000 acres currently enrolled in Iowa are in expiring contracts.

Seed count testing standardized
The National Conference on Weights and Measures recently passed a measure that will standardize testing methods and procedures for seed count labeling. The new procedures, which will go into effect Jan. 1, 2011, will benefit both farmers and seed companies by creating uniform procedures for testing corn, soybean, field bean and wheat seed by weight, volume, measure and count.

Senate Democrats abandon comprehensive climate bill
Conceding they can't find enough votes, Senate Democrats announced they are abandoning for now efforts to put together a comprehensive energy bill. Instead, according to sources, they will push for a more limited bill.

Gov. Culver pushes for renewable
energy standards
Renewable energy proponents, including Iowa Gov. Chet Culver, are pushing Congress to establish a national renewable electricity standard that will spur more investment in U.S. manufacturing related to wind, solar and other alternative energy sources.

Be an ambassador for Rotary and the U.S. on trip to New Zealand
Rotary District 6000 (roughly half of Iowa south of Hwy. 30, excluding Cedar Rapids) is seeking non-Rotarians between ages of 25 and 40, including representatives of agriculture, to participate in a professional development and goodwill trip to northern New Zealand, Mar. 18-April 15.
