Agronomic tip of the week: Soybean defoliators can add up

During August in Iowa, soybeans can have a mixture of defoliating insects. The general rule of thumb is to estimate field-wide defoliation, no matter what insect or multiple insects are present.

Begin scouting for SDS in soybeans

Governor signs two bills of interest for soybean farmers
Last Thursday, Governor Branstad signed two bills that ISA had worked on this year. The first was the bill moving the Water Resources Coordinating Council and its accompanying funding to IDALS. The second was the Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations bill, which contained funding for ISA’s On-Farm Network® program.

Northey: Northey: 2011 Legislative session presented challenges, opportunities for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship
Looking back on the 2011 session, Iowa Ag Secretary Bill Northey said, “Overall, this legislative session was a mixed bag for the Department as legislators showed great confidence in the ability of our employees and gave us a number of new responsibilities, but another $175,000 cut to our general fund budget will continue to present challenges.”

Biodiesel achieves 5-to-1 return on fossil energy; plus additional updates

Mixed signals on FTAs
U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said the Obama Administration is working with lawmakers to move the process forward on three pending free trade agreements However, there are also reports the White House has decided not to send the deals to Congress before the August recess.

China to raise soybean imports from July
China is likely to start importing more soybeans and vegetable oils from July after weak purchases in past months, Hamburg-based oilseeds analysts Oil World forecast on Tuesday.
