Agronomic Tip of the Week

It’s time to begin monitoring fields for soybean aphids and diseases. There have been reports of aphids in Northeast Iowa, but numbers remain low. SDS may begin showing up in fields in early to mid-August. It’s a little early for white mold symptoms, but there is little doubt this disease will be problematic this year.

ISA Goes to Washington
ISA representatives attending the ASA legislative forum and board meeting July 12-15 in Washington visited Capitol Hill, and met with the Iowa delegation. Among the topics: the biodiesel industry, trade agreements and the estate tax. ISA addresses soybean farmers’ legislative interests, thanks to the support of its policy members. Pictured: Sen. China's Soybean Imports Rising Fast
China's Oct. 2009/Sept. 2010 soybean imports are likely to rise to 49.7 million tonnes, up 8.6 million tonnes from last season. This is above USDA's forecast on July 9 of 48 million tonnes, in turn up from the department's June estimate of 47 million tonnes.

Heard On The Street: Food for Thought

With an estimated 9.2 billion mouths to feed by 2050, up from 6.8 billion now, and growing demand from wealthier emerging-market consumers for a high-protein diet, the challenge of feeding the world looks daunting. That should provide a huge boost to agribusiness stocks over coming years, but will still require investors to have an appetite for risk.

Calling for Volunteers
Next month ISA is involved in two of Iowa’s premiere agriculture events: the Iowa State Fair and the Farm Progress Show. The association is looking for volunteers for 3-hour shifts at both events. Volunteers will be given a free pass for admission and parking, a meal voucher and a t-shirt.

New Biodiesel Tank at Ottumwa Terminal Increases Access
Iowa petroleum distributors can receive up to 20 percent off their B100 purchase on July 27, to celebrate the Grand Opening of the biodiesel tank at the Ottumwa BP Terminal. “Biodiesel seems to be the best kept secret in Iowa,” said Grant Menke, IRFA biofuels manager. “We hope this promotion will catch jobbers’ and retailers’ attention."
