Agronomic tip of the week: Updated Soybean Aphid Field Guide available from ISA and ISU
The Iowa Soybean Association and Iowa State University have released a collaborative second edition of the Soybean Aphid Field Guide. David Wright, ISA director of contract research, notes, “This resource is a must-have for all Iowa soybean producers.”

Lower complaint filing fees for agricultural and other shippers
On July 7, the Surface Transportation Board (STB) announced it will significantly reduce the fee for rail customers to file a rate or “unreasonable practice” complaint from $20,000 to $350. The $150 fee to file an expedited small rate case will remain in effect.

Green Farmstead Partner program open houses
Since 2009, more than 40 Iowa livestock farms have utilized the services available through the Coalition to Support Iowa Farmers (CSIF) Green Farmstead Partner program. Several have agreed to open their farms this summer to let the public and other farmers see their tree plantings and learn about the benefits of shelterbelts on livestock farms.

Containers flood ship routes in echo of 2009 rate decline

Iowa Food & Family Project looking for State Fair volunteers
Don't miss a chance to be a part of the Iowa Food & Family's interactive exhibit, "Together We CAN!" during the 2011 Iowa State Fair. A larger-than-life farm and food creation will be built entirely from canned froods in the atrium of the Varied Industries Building, benefiting the Iowa Food Bank Association.

Rousseff said to consider Maggi for Brazil transport minister
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff may name Senator Blairo Maggi, whose family is the world’s largest soybean grower, as transport minister. Maggi would replace Alfredo Nascimento, who became the second Rousseff cabinet minister to resign in a month amid allegations of a kickbacks scheme.

Egg industry, Humane Society propose cage laws
In an unusual move, the United Egg Producers announced last week in a joint appearance with the Humane Society of the United States that it would agree to seek federal regulation to improve conditions for egg-laying hens. The egg group represents 95 percent of the egg-laying hens in the United States.
