Statehouse Review - Week 2

Last week work in the House focused on the Taxpayers First Act (HF45). A public hearing was held, allowing 93 people to speak, of which approximately three-fourths were opposed to HF 45. After about eight hours of debate, the House voted 60-40, along party lines, in favor of the budget-cutting bill. The bill moved to the Senate, where major changes are expected.

Agronomic Tip of the Week: New Soybean Disease Guide Now Available

A new publication from Iowa State University and the Iowa Soybean Association is designed to help farmers more effectively manage soybean diseases when they appear. The 36-page publication, “Soybean Diseases”, is a comprehensive compilation of soybean disease and management information.

Gingrich Visits Iowa, Offers Ideas
When former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich was in Des Moines on Tuesday to speak to the Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit, he also met with Gov. Branstad and other state leaders about a number of ideas, including a proposal to eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency.

Iowa Ag Secretary Northey Keynotes 2011 On-Farm Network Conference
Iowa Ag Secretary and farmer Bill Northey will kick off the 2011 Iowa Soybean Association On-Farm Network® Conference on Feb. 22 in Ames, with a discussion of grower efforts to improve fertilizer management practices.The conference will also feature educational sessions on topics studied by On-Farm Network participating farmers.

ISA and IFBF present Advocates for Agriculture: Lead Out Loud
ISA and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF) Young Farmers Committee present “Advocates for Agriculture: Lead Out Loud” with Troy and Stacy Hadrick on Feb. 7 in Cedar Rapids, Feb. 8 in Ankeny and Feb. 9 in Storm Lake. The Hadricks are ranchers who turned a media nightmare into a grassroots campaign to tell ag's story.

USDA Reiterates Support for Renewable Fuels
Last week U.S. Ag Secretary Vilsack announced projects in 33 states for producing and using biofuels. He also announced funding for 68 grants to determine feasibility of other renewable energy projects.

Vilsack's Proposed Biotech Crop Limits Criticized
Lawmakers are questioning Ag Secretary Vilsack's authority to restrict planting a biotech version of alfalfa to protect growers of organic and other nonbiotech varieties from contamination.

DNR Offers Watershed Planning Grants
The DNR is opening the third round of Watershed Planning Grants, which help local Iowa groups improve Iowa’s state’s lakes, streams and rivers. Applications are due April 1. Planning grants offer $10,000 to $50,000 to develop Watershed Management Plan. Local or regional groups, organizations or agencies are eligible.

Northey Asks Eligible Century and Heritage Farm Owners to Apply
Iowa Ag Secretary Bill Northey encourages eligible farm owners to apply for the 2011 Century and Heritage Farm Program. The program recognizes families that have owned their farm for 100 years in the case of Century Farms and 150 years for Heritage Farms.

ISA to Award Up to $15,000 in Scholarships
ISA is looking for qualified candidates to apply for its agriculture scholarships. ISA will award up to $15,000 this year through the ISA Ag Scholarship Program; it will be presented in as many as ten $1,500 scholarships to capable high school seniors pursuing a degree in agriculture or an agriculture-related field.
