Iowa Legislative Report
The snow flew into the state, bringing the legislators and a flurry of activity at the capitol with it. The 84th General Assembly is set to focus on the budget, including spending cuts, and the economy, with Republicans in control of the House, 60-40, along with the Governor’s office, and Democrats in control of the Senate, 26-23.

ISA Responds to USDA Crop Report
The USDA issued its annual report, giving final numbers for the 2010 crop. According to the report, U.S. soybean production totaled 3.33 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the November forecast and down 1 percent from 2009. For Iowa, soybean production is estimated at 496 million bushels.

Soy Transportation Coalition Tours Panama Canal
The board of directors of the Soy Transportation Coalition (STC) and other soybean industry leaders toured the Panama Canal in conjunction with the organization’s annual meeting on Dec. 15-16, 2010. The purpose of the visit was to see firsthand the Panama Canal in operation and receive an update on the progress of the canal expansion project.

ISU Named "Institutional Research Facility of the Year"
The Biofuels Digest Awards have just been announced, and ISU was recognized as the “Institutional Research Facility of the Year.” ISU's BioCentury Research Farm provides researchers the opportunity to integrate harvesting, transportation, storage, and processing, as well as test plant breeding, genomics, cropping systems, soil conservation and nutrient management.

Senate Ag Chair Outlines Goals
The Senate Ag Committee chair outlined her objectives this week. She said she is committed to a strong safety net in the next farm bill and she addressed concerns the EPA has overstepped its boundaries. She also said it is her job to make sure the Administration understands the importance of agriculture and rural development.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack is proposing to deregulate Roundup® Ready alfalfa with “conditions” that include a mandatory minimum planting distance, so organic fields of alfalfa wouldn’t be contaminated.
