ISA Plans Hill Visit Days During
Legislative Session

The ISA Policy and District Coordinator teams will host several Hill Visit Days during the 2011 Iowa Legislative Session. ISA directors, District Advisory Council members and all policy members are encouraged to check calendars and find a day to visit the capitol with ISA Staff.

Agronomic Tip of the Week: Attend ISU Extension's Crop Advantage Series

ISU Extension’s Crop Advantage Series is scheduled for Jan. 4–27, 2011, in locations around the state, including Sheldon, Osceola, Ottumwa, Burlington , Ames. Mason City,  Spirit Lake,  Storm Lake, Cedar Rapids,  Fort Dodge,  LeMars, Carroll,  Waterloo and Atlantic.

ISA Invites Consumers to Register for Trip and Learn Where Food Comes From

ISA has launched an innovative contest, titled "Be Our Guest, Be A Farmer," to help consumers learn about where their food comes from. One lucky contestant and guests will win a trip to Iowa to tour several farms, drive a tractor and enjoy a home-cooked meal with a farm family, as well as receive red-carpet treatment at the Iowa State Fair.

Soybean Production Information Expanded

ISA's Production Research online library has been expanded with new information to help Iowa’s soybean farmers increase yield. It includes ISA's newest publications, as well as numerous other popular titles, including many in electronic formats such as video and podcasts and with smartphone compatibility.

STC Elects Officers for 2011

The Soy Transportation Coalition (STC) announced its newly elected officers at its annual meeting on Dec. 15. ISA Director Ed Ulch of Solon, Iowa, was elected Chairman.

Biodiesel Industry Primed to Flourish
in 2011

Boom times are ahead for a biodiesel industry that struggled just to stay alive in 2010, according to a recent Des Moines Register article. The industry could produce as much as a billion gallons in 2011, nearly triple 2010 production.

U.S. District Court of Appeals Denies Legal Challenges to RFS2

In a unanimous opinion on Dec. 21, the U.S. District Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, denied the petition by National Petrochemical Refiners Association and the American Petroleum Institute challenging the RFS2 regulations.

Census Impact on Agriculture

The latest census numbers indicate that, while urban areas continue to grow and will add new Congressional seats, rural areas will have less representation in Congress. That could make it tougher to build support for farm programs. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently discussed the issue.

ASA's WISHH and USDA Ship Soy Flour
to Afghanistan

On Dec. 20, the American Soybean Association’s (ASA) World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) and USDA made final preparations of a shipment of soy flour to Afghanistan. The 3,525 50-pound bags of soy flour shipped  will deliver the benefits of high-protein soy to 5,000 Afghan families.

IRFA Announces $4,000 Video Contest for High School Students

The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association launched a $4,000 “Fuel the Future” video contest for Iowa high school students, looking for the best video highlighting the benefits of renewable fuels—such as ethanol and biodiesel. The top four video entries will receive cash prizes. Entries must be received by Jan. 17.
