Obama's 2012 Budget and Ag Spending

President Obama unveiled his fiscal 2012 budget, which would reduce or eliminate over 200 federal programs including a $3.2 billion reduction for USDA. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says the budget reflects the fact overall agriculture is enjoying economic strength.

Iowa Biodiesel Producers Push for Support at State Capitol

When buying diesel in Iowa, chances are good it may contain a small amount of biodiesel, thanks to a retailers’ incentive in the state. But that incentive will expire at the end of 2011 unless the legislature takes action to extend it. Members of the Iowa Biodiesel Board met with Gov. Branstad, Lt. Gov. Reynolds, and legislators on Wednesday to discuss the program.

Iowa Ag Secretary Northey Keynotes 2011 On-Farm Network Conference

Iowa Ag Secretary and farmer Bill Northey will kick off the 2011 Iowa Soybean Association On-Farm Network® Conference on Feb. 22 in Ames, with a discussion of grower efforts to improve fertilizer management practices.The conference will also feature educational sessions on topics studied by On-Farm Network participating farmers.

Northey Urges Self-Regulation

Iowa Ag Secretary Bill Northey says the state’s 90,000 farmers live in interesting but challenging times — with growing demand for their products. But farmers also face increasing environmental scrutiny. "If what we do is enough and if it makes sense, that's a good alternative to regulation," he says.

2011 Iowa Power Farming Show Planting Intentions Survey

An acreage survey conducted during the Iowa Power Farming Show has been combined with an online Midwest acreage survey and incorporated in a table to estimate U.S. planting intentions. Data does not point to a convincing shift away from the previous year’s acreage.

Export Cargoes up 85 Percent at Port of Grays Harbor

As export volumes of dry bulk agricultural products like soybean meal and distillers dried grains (DDGs) topped one million metric tons, the Port of Grays Harbor also handled one-third of all automobiles exported through U.S. West Coast ports and celebrated a record year.

Ag and Culinary Scholarships Announced

ISA will award as many as ten $1,500 scholarships to high school seniors pursuing a degree in an agriculture-related field. In addition, a Culinary Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded to a student planning to pursue a career in food science and technology.
