Agronomic Tip of the Week: ISU's 2010 Evaluation of SCN-Resistant Varieties
Using resistant soybean varieties is an effective strategy for managing soybean cyst nematodes (SCN). Each year, ISU researchers evaluate public and private SCN-resistant soybean varieties in SCN-infested fields throughout the state. A recently published report describes the performance of those varieties and their effect on SCN numbers.

President Obama will send his proposed budget to Congress in mid-February. Congress will begin the usual cycle of hearings and try to agree on a Budget Resolution for FY-2012 by May 1. On the Federal Senate Ag Committee, there were no surprises and no real changes. The Democrats lost one seat (Lincoln) with no other change. The Republicans picked up one seat, and Sen Cornyn (TX) dropped off. Both Senators from Iowa are on the Committee.

State Legislative Affairs: Governor Announces Budget Parameters
Overall, Governor Branstad has proposed a two-year budget, with the first year about $200 million under Governor Culver’s last budget. The size and cost of state government must be reduced, Branstad said, adding that the state must exercise discipline and make tough choices over the next few years.

Global Soyoil Use to Exceed Output
Global soyoil consumption is likely to rise above production in the current season with Chinese and European demand remaining strong, Hamburg-based oilseeds analysts Oil World forecast on Tuesday. But it also warned that current high global soyoil prices could curb consumption for biodiesel output in some parts of the world.

Iowa Ag Secretary Northey Keynotes 2011 On-Farm Network Conference
Iowa Ag Secretary and farmer Bill Northey will kick off the 2011 Iowa Soybean Association On-Farm Network® Conference on Feb. 22 in Ames, with a discussion of grower efforts to improve fertilizer management practices.The conference will also feature educational sessions on topics studied by On-Farm Network participating farmers.

ISA to Award Up to $15,000 in Scholarships
ISA is looking for qualified candidates to apply for its agriculture scholarships. ISA will award up to $15,000 this year through the ISA Ag Scholarship Program; it will be presented in as many as ten $1,500 scholarships to capable high school seniors pursuing a degree in agriculture or an agriculture-related field.
