New analysis finds 1 in 6 Iowans employed by agriculture
A just-completed economic analysis sponsored by the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers reveals that production agriculture and ag-related industries directly or indirectly employ one of every six Iowans and add $72.1 billion to the state’s economy, or 27 percent of the state’s total. Oilseeds (soybeans) generate 16,656 jobs within the state and have total economic value of $2.873 billion.

Biodiesel call for action: Submit comments to EPA

Cantwell/Grassley Biodiesel Tax Reform and Extension Act introduced
U.S. Senators Cantwell (D-WA) and Grassley (R-IA) have introduced the Biodiesel Tax Reform and Extension Act of 2009. This legislation would restructure the current law biodiesel blenders credit as a production excise tax credit, consistent with National Biodiesel Board (NBB) resolutions, and extend the reformed incentive for five years. NBB applauds the introduction of this legislation.

Thirteen professionals from across the nation, including cookbook authors, magazine food editors, columnists, bloggers and test kitchen directors, recently spent three days in Iowa, learning about soy, including where it comes from, its health benefits and how it can easily be incorporated into delicious foods.

50th Anniversary of Khrushchev's visit: Celebrating agriculture's contribution to diplomacy
Fifty years after Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev came to Iowa during the icy depths of the Cold War to visit his farmer friend Roswell Garst, a statewide commemoration will be held August 27-30. Participants include Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack, Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and Nikita’s son Sergei Khrushchev. The public is invited to join in this unique celebration.
