Tip of the week: Update on soybean rust

Soybean rust has currently been confirmed in less than 10 counties in the U.S. This includes five in Florida, three in Alabama and one in Texas. Soybean rust has also been confirmed in six states in Mexico, just south of Texas. Low inoculum (spores) from a colder-than-average winter and drier weather in parts of the southern U.S. have contributed to this slow build up of soybean rust.

European droughts to boost soy demand
According to Hamburg-based Oil World, global demand for soybeans, soyoil and soymeal is likely to rise as traditional consumers of drought-damaged oilseed crops in Europe seek alternatives.
"The global dependence on soybeans will increase in the 2010/11 season owing to smaller than expected world production and supplies of rapeseed and canola as well as of sunflower seed," it said.

Sudden Death Syndrome 'toasts' Iowa soybean crop
Most soybean fields in Iowa--a state normally ranked as one of the nation's top-two producers of that important oilseed--are currently under siege from Sudden Death Syndrome, a dramatically named plant disease that often slashes harvest yields by 20 percent to 60 percent.

DTN announces plans for Ag Summit 2010
DTN and The Progressive Farmer invite ISA members to Ag Summit 2010, "Recalibrate for the New Normal," at the Downtown Chicago Marriott, Dec. 7-10.
