With five days left officially, the 2011 legislative session showed no clear path to adjournment. The sticking point is how to deal with the budget bills. The Governor continues to insist on a two-year budget and vetoed the appropriation bill because it didn’t meet this criteria.

Meteorologist: 2011 Setting Up Like 2008

Many weather aficionados like to compare current weather patterns to those of previous years.  One of them—DTN ag meteorologist Bryce Anderson—says 2011 is starting to set up a lot like 2008. Anderson says we may be well into May before this wet weather pattern starts to relax.

Iowa Agriculture Department Faces More Budget Cuts

Budget reductions have left the Iowa Department of Agriculture struggling, and the situation could worsen as the agency faces the likelihood of more cost-cutting. The agency's budget has been cut from $45 million in the 2010 fiscal year to $34 million in the current fiscal year. The situation likely won't improve in the coming year.

USSEC Staff, Members Donate $30,000 for Japan Relief

USSEC staff, member companies and farmers are donating $30,000 to the Red Cross for earthquake and tsunami relief in Japan. The “Japan-United States Soybean Friendship Aid” program was created as a way for individuals working at USSEC and USSEC stakeholders to provide relief in wake of the March 11 disaster.

U.S. Soymeal Exports to SE Asia Falls, but Soybean Exports Rise

U.S. soymeal exports to Southeast Asia may fall to 1.1 million metric tons this year from 2.4 million tons in 2009-10. Meanwhile, U.S. soybean exports to Southeast Asia could rise by around 100,000 tons to 2.4 million metric tons due to stronger demand in countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand.
