ISA responds to USDA crop report

The USDA has released its report of spring planting intentions this week. ISA CEO Kirk Leeds says although the estimate for soybean acres is higher than last year, it is lower than many expected. “Weather will be a major determinant of the final acreage mix,” Leeds says.

ISA leaders participate in trade mission to Japan

ISA leaders are among those joining Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Northey on a trade mission to Japan to promote continuing trade with that important export market and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Yamanashi “hog lift.”

Heavy wagons, trucks, grain carts and combines moving across wet ground last fall all contributed to compaction issues. The best thing you can do this spring is avoid making any more trips than absolutely necessary across a wet field.

Legislative update

The Iowa Legislature adjourned on March 30, concluding the shortest session in several decades. The session was full of controversy about budgets, spending and tax credits, making it difficult for organizations such as ISA to advocate for any legislation that might involve appropriations. However, ISA worked for and helped gain passage of some significant legislation for farmers.

Kemp attends advanced leadership program

ISA Director Brian Kemp recently participated in Part II of the ASA Leadership At Its Best program. The program strengthens state farmer-leaders’ skills in leadership, communication, effectively addressing Congress and interacting with the media as well as understanding policy issues.

Northey praises bipartisan support for extension of ethanol tax credit, tariff

Ag Secretary Northey issued a statement regarding introduction of bipartisan legislation to extend the Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit and ethanol tariff for five years and the cellulosic tax credit for three years. All five members of Iowa’s congressional delegation are cosponsors of the legislation.

IBB comments on legislative session ending without passage of biodiesel bill

As the Legislature adjourned without taking action on the Biodiesel Fuel Quality Standard, Randy Olson, executive director of the Iowa Biodiesel Board, issued a statement: "Of course we are disappointed that the Iowa House of Representatives did not take a vote on the B5 bill, but at the same time we are grateful to the many legislators who took a stand for biodiesel."
